A training orchestra promoting intercultural dialogue in the Mediterranean
well known as Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée (OJM), was founded in 1984 by the Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) and the French Ministère de la Culture. It organises several training sessions throughout the year in order to offer young future professional musicians from the PACA area and the Mediterranean some «professional» experience of orchestral life, both in rehearsals and concert.
In 2010, the Aix-en-Provence Festival joined forces with the Orchestre des Jeunes de la Méditerranée (OJM) to create an Orchestra Academy, trained by musicians in residence at the Festival during four years, the London Symphony Orchestra. More than a simple orchestra summer training session, the Academy aims to support young musicians from Mediterranean countries in their training and career development, but also to promote musical creation in the area, in cooperation with the Festival and OJM’s partner institutions and conservatories.
The OJM summer session is part of the Orchestra Academy of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Dedicated to symphonic music, it is open to young musicians in their last years of studies enrolled in conservatories in the PACA area and the Mediterranean. The summer session also encapsulates a student-tutors training which brings the young professional musicians to learn techniques and have experience in sharing classical music with young people and those unable to go to performances.
