For their 2003 programme the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra under
their conductor Roland Hayrabedian have chosen to evoke an impression
of Algeria through new works inspired by the writings of the Algerian
novelist, poet, and playwright Kateb Yacine (1929-1989). Works have
been commissioned from composers Edith Canat de Chizy and Luca Antignani.
Folk music is given pride of place in these orchestrations of traditional
Algerian and Italian songs as revisited and reworked by the Mediterranean
Youth Orchestra. This Musiques pour un visage (Music for
a Face) programme is completed by a 20th century work by Maurice
Ravel.

COMPOSERS
Edith Canat de Chizy
Born in 1950, she has lived since 1970 in Paris where she studied
music at the CNSM. She was a pupil of Ivo Malec and Maurice Ohana,
and in 1990 she received the International Tribune of Composers'
Prize, as well as several other composition prizes. The study of
electroacoustic music, and her training as a violonist have given
her a particular sense of timbre and sound material. As well as
being a composer, she has been director of the Conservatory of the
XVe arrondissement of Paris since 1986.
Luca Antignani
Born in Italy in 1976, he studied piano composition, orchestral
direction and electronic music. He is currently studying composition
and musical data-processing at the Paris Ircam. He was commissioned
by Luciano Berio to write a score for the 2004/2005 season of the
Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He was selected to represent
Europe at the Forum 2002 in Montreal and Radio France entrusted
him with a commission for chamber orchestra. He has won many international
prizes and his compositions have been performed at many contemporary
music festivals in Italy.
Maurice Ravel (1875-1937)
Maurice Ravel is the most classical of all the french modern composers.
Attracted by symphonic music (La Valse, Boléro, Daphnis
et Chloé) he also wrote for the piano (Jeux d’eau,
Gaspard de la nuit, Concerto pour la main gauche), and composed
cycles of melodies (Shéhérazade) and, for
the stage, the lyrical fantasy L'Enfant et les sortilèges.
His work is remarkable for the precision of the melodic line and
the brilliance of its orchestration.
