A training orchestra promoting intercultural dialogue in the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean Youth Orchestra

well known as OJM, was founded in 1984 by the Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) and the French Ministère de la Culture. It organises several training sessions throughout the year in order to offer young future professional musicians from the PACA area and the Mediterranean some «professional» experience of orchestral life, both in rehearsals and concert.

Orchestra Academy

In 2010 the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra (OJM) joined forces to create an Orchestra Academy, in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra in residence at the Festival. The summer training sessions are now happening in this frame every year. This Academy is open to young musicians who have an advanced musical level and who study in conservatories from the Région PACA and from the Mediterranean Basin. It also develops a special training for “student-tutors” to learn how to teach and to build an orchestra discovery programme and it organizes a professional meeting about working as an orchestra player, called the Round Tables of the Mediterranean.

2013 training sessions

For 2013, the OJM will be associated with several regional operators to develop projects supported by Marseille-Provence 2013, European capital of culture. Three training sessions will allow young musicians to open up to other kinds of music, brass band and jazz, and also to confront with dance and street arts.
